The Birkman Method elucidates our behavioral drivers

The Birkman Method questionnaire poses nearly 300 questions to explore our motivation, self-perception, social perception, and mindset perspectives to help characterize our perceptions and behaviors, as well as what motivates them. 

Yielding insights typically requiring multiple assessments, Birkman’s comprehensive approach examines these motivators and behaviors in four dimensions:

Interests

Interests characterize what we like doing and activities that attract us

Usual Behaviors

Usual Behaviors characterize our “best self” productive behaviors 

Needs

Needs characterize how we expect to be treated and what we expect from our environments

Stress Behaviors

Stress Behaviors characterize non-productive behaviors exhibited when our Needs are not sufficiently met

The Birkman Map

Birkman Maps are powerful, high-level visual representations of our unique personalities.

The Birkman Map is divided into color quadrants by two axes.

The vertical axis represents an Introversion / Extroversion continuum, while the horizontal axis represents People-orientation / Task-orientation continuum.

Each color corresponds to a high-level core temperament archetype described below.

Doer — favors results through decisive action

Communicator — likes working with people

Analyzer — prefers structure and detailed planning

Thinker — innovates through reflective contemplation

Our unique personality features are revealed by where the symbols representing our own Interests, Needs, Usual Behaviors, and Stress Behaviors are placed on the map.

Their positions indicate where each of these personality features are uniquely situated for us—indicating degrees of preference on each continuum.

This example shows someone who’s Interests and Usual Behaviors align, but which are both opposite of their Needs and Stress Behaviors—suggesting others may not easily recognize their preference for structure, process, or planning around shared activities.

Birkman Components

Describing behaviors we exhibit and those we need or expect from others, the Birkman Components reveal much deeper personality insights.

The Birkman Method measures your Needs, Usual Behaviors, and Stress Behaviors across nine distinct behavior scales (each a distinct continuum), called the Birkman Components.
